The Design: Reflecting Alberta’s Soul – Kevin Tarin
There are places that don’t just serve as a backdrop; they actively participate in the story of a space. Alberta, with its vast skies, dramatic mountain ranges, rolling foothills, and resilient flora, is undeniably one of those places. The Client’s vision was clear yet profound: they wanted a home that felt less like an imposition on the landscape and more like a conversation with it.
To be entrusted with designing a space in such a breathtaking corner of the world was, and remains, an incredible privilege. It was an opportunity not just to design a house, but to craft an experience deeply rooted in the spirit of Alberta.

The Vision: Listening to the Land and the Client
Our journey began not with floor plans or fabric swatches, but with conversations and walks around the property. The owners weren’t just building a house; they were creating a sanctuary, a place to connect with nature, entertain loved ones, and find quiet repose. They spoke of wanting warmth, durability, and an uninterrupted dialogue with the outdoors. Key themes emerged:
- Embracing the Views: Maximizing sightlines to the [mention specific feature: e.g., Rocky Mountains, rolling hills, prairie expanse, dense forest] was paramount.
- Natural Materiality: A desire for materials that felt authentic to the region – stone, wood, textures that echoed the surrounding environment.
- Comfort and Functionality: Creating spaces that were as practical and comfortable for daily living as they were beautiful.
- A Sense of Belonging: Ensuring the final design felt integrated, as if it had naturally settled into its surroundings.
This collaborative phase was crucial. My role was to listen intently, interpret their desires, and translate that shared vision into a tangible design concept, always using the stunning Alberta landscape as our ultimate guide.

Designing the Foothills Horizon Residence was more than just a project; it was an honour. I am deeply grateful to the owners for their trust, their collaborative spirit, and their inspiring vision. And I remain in awe of the Alberta landscape – a constant source of inspiration and a powerful reminder of the beauty we can create when we design with respect for our surroundings.
This project reaffirmed my belief that the most successful designs are those that tell a story, and this home tells a beautiful story of connection, comfort, and the enduring majesty of Alberta.
